Edit: While this video was made a few years ago, it's still an excellent introduction to who I am as a teacher, and what I value. To update the dates in the video though, as of this current moment of time (summer of 2023) I have taught overseas for 14 years total, and 11 years in international schools.

Co-constructed Ancient Civilizations Success Criteria

For my March 2012 practicum, I was in a grade 5 classroom, at a school in North York. A large portion of my practicum was spent teaching a Social Studies, Ancient Civilizations inquiry unit. The unit began with a read aloud, followed by a class on defining what an ancient civilization is. We then completed toy theatre (with a compare and contrast). Mapping lessons and research methods lessons followed, before finally "selling" the students different civilizations they could study. This led to a research paper and their culminating task. Essentially, I trekked to two different public libraries and tried to determine which civilizations contained enough resources for students to be able to effectively research in class (as computer time was limited). The civilizations they could choose from included: Inca, Maya, Aztec, Mesopotamian, Ancient India/Indus Valley, Ancient China, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome and Ancient Egypt. Art Project - Settings for "The Lorax"

Earlier in the year, students had an opportunity to create their own setting from Dr. Seuss' The Lorax.  We were studying setting at that time, and at literacy centres they had one period to finish their diorammas. This was an opportunity for students to transfer their knowledge of the book, the story and the colors into a beautiful piece of art. Not to mention, students were given a certain amount of play dough and one piece of cardboard to mount it on per group, so they had to talk about what they wanted to do and compromise. All of them chose to do the more pretty/colorful settings, as opposed to The Onceler's House , which I think just speaks to the settings that appeal to them as young learners. If there was more time, we could have done paper theatre plays within the settings where the trees were upright.
