Postcrossing

Last year I found out about an excellent program called Postcrossing. With Postcrossing, you sign up for an account and then can initially send up to 5 postcards. The addresses that you are given are random, and you must also write a code on the back of each postcard. Once the postcards arrive, they are registered by the person who receives them. After that your address goes into the random pool and you can receive a postcard from anyone doing the program, anywhere in the world. Students really enjoyed doing this last year, and it enabled us to learn a lot about the world around us, by finding connections with different places around the world. It made us all more global minded! Below is our Postcrossing board mid-year.

With the start of the Year 3 Sharing the Planet unit, we have been spending some time on our wonderful school campus, observing the flora and fauna. We are really lucky to be in the location that we are in, in terms of all of the opportunities we have to engage in learning in the outdoors. Year 3 has been spending time outside doing both Mathematical and Scientific observations. In terms of Mathematics, we have been looking at the symmetry we can find in nature. We went outside to find once living and natural materials and then brought them back to class to sketch. Students were also invited to look at pictures of other plants and animals in books, in order to further examine the concept of symmetry. Moving forward we will go back into nature (onto school campus, and the beach) to look at the different shapes that we can find. Co-constructed Ancient Civilizations Success Criteria

For my March 2012 practicum, I was in a grade 5 classroom, at a school in North York. A large portion of my practicum was spent teaching a Social Studies, Ancient Civilizations inquiry unit. The unit began with a read aloud, followed by a class on defining what an ancient civilization is. We then completed toy theatre (with a compare and contrast). Mapping lessons and research methods lessons followed, before finally "selling" the students different civilizations they could study. This led to a research paper and their culminating task. Essentially, I trekked to two different public libraries and tried to determine which civilizations contained enough resources for students to be able to effectively research in class (as computer time was limited). The civilizations they could choose from included: Inca, Maya, Aztec, Mesopotamian, Ancient India/Indus Valley, Ancient China, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome and Ancient Egypt.  The following is a paper for the Queen's University PME (Professional Master of Education) for the course PME 811: Innovation in Teaching and Learning.  At the start of the course we were asked to read some articles and define the terms: Innovation, Creativity, Teaching and Learning.
