Science Experiment Fun!

Every year I try to get the students engaged in the scientific process at least once, in order to understand the form of something scientific that we're learning about. This year we looked at some science experiments about the weather / earth systems to help us understand a bit more about natural disasters.

Unfortunately I cannot show images of any of the students doing the science experiments themselves, rather just some of the finished products. All experiments come from Weather Wiz Kids. The experiments were pre-selected by myself with the consideration of how much students would learn about the science behind weather and earth systems by engaging in the experiment. Of course some experiments were also chosen with consideration for the "coolness factor" in order to get students truly interested and engaged.

At first we did the good old "Mentos and Diet Cola" explosion as our example / examplar. We did research as a class, through videos, about how volcanoes erupt, in order to write our conclusion. We also went outside to conduct the experiment.

On the actual day students had already filled in the beginning of a graphic organizer and had brought in all their materials and were ready to go! At the science lab they wrote down what happened and then when they got back they did research to make sense of it. Students also discussed what they thought should be included in the final poster and then were given a checklist based on this.

After students wrote out the scientific process, they then practiced presenting based on a list that they came up with for what makes a good presentation. They then gave each other tips on how to improve before the final presentation. It was very evident that they took each other's feedback into account and had a lot of fun / learned a lot throughout this whole process!
